Things to Do While in Las Vegas
There are many scenic wonders located within easy driving distance from Las Vegas. For a change of pace, go on one of these excursions. Grand Canyon - The Grand Canyon is 300 miles from Las Vegas. Various bus companies and airline companies offer tours of the canyon. For real excitement, try taking a mule train down into the canyon on a narrow trail. The beauty and majesty of the Grand Canyon should not be missed when you are in Las Vegas. Valley of Fire State Park - This is a 36,000 acre state park composed of brilliant reddish earth and rocks. This type of earth surrounds for miles. This is not a pleasant environment for man. Millions of years of winds and water erosion caused unusual shapes of sans and limestone to form. Oxidation of iron caused the rocks to turn red and pink. There is no food or gas in the park, so tourists should bring food, gas, and water if desired .Hoover Dam - Construction was complete on the Hoover Dam in 1936 through the work of 5,200 men working all night. These workers lived in Boulder City, a city created specifically by dam workers. Huge amounts of hydroelectric power are created by the dam providing water for irrigation and putting a halt to the yearly floods. There is an area to tour which is across from the dam. Take the family on this wonderful and educational side trip while in the Las Vegas area. Lake Mead - Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the country. Created by the construction of Hoover Dam, it provides a great recreational facility for the people of Las Vegas and visitors as well. Red Rock Canyon - Red Rock Canyon is 19 miles west of Las Vegas and has many rocks that are suitable for rock climbing. Millions of years were necessary for the rocks in this park to form. The park has plant life such as purple sage, yucca, Joshua trees, ponderosa pines, and creosote bushes. Take time on your visit to Las Vegas to visit and study the canyon . |
